ABOUT DR OGILVIE

Specialist Physician & Endocrinologist

FRCP(Edin), FCP(SA), MRCP(UK), MRCGP(UK), DRCOG(UK), MBChB(Glas)

Arla was born and brought up in Scotland. From an early age she set her heart on becoming a doctor.  She pursued this vocation single-mindedly, studying medicine at the University of Glasgow. She graduated in 1984 at the age of 22.

She obtained her diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1987, and her membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners the following year. This allowed Arla to develop broad expertise and apply this to her specialist practice in internal medicine. She qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of the UK in 1990.

In 1991, having married a South African, Arla moved to Cape Town, and took up a Registrar post on the Medical Rotation at the University of Cape Town, under Professor Solly Benatar. She became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa in 1992 and then specialised further as a Senior Registrar in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Subsequently Arla practiced at the Centre for Diabetes & Endocrinology in Houghton, Johannesburg.

In 1998 the family relocated to the United Kingdom, settling in London, where for the following 2 decades Arla practiced as a Specialist Physician and Endocrinologist, both in the National Health Service, and in private practice. In addition to her clinical practice Arla became actively involved in medical education and in leading and developing clinical services.

Arla opened her practice in Knysna at the end of 2019 just before COVID struck. This was a very difficult period for all concerned, not least for her and her staff, as they cared for the sick throughout the pandemic. The practice is now established as a centre of excellence for endocrine and diabetes services, as well as in general internal medicine.
